Dolly Parton escaped the struggles that shaped her life at an early age by using her creative and imaginative imagination. Her songs were written before she knew how to write and read. The first time she picked up a guitar was when she was 8 and started performing on an Knoxville Tenn radio station at age eleven. She recorded her first album in the same calendar year with Gold Band Records, a small independent label.
